CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Katonah-Lewisboro Board of Education trustee and Section 1 wrestling icon Bill Swertfager will be taking his place among the greats this fall.
Swertfager, who enjoyed a storied and successful career as a wrestling coach at both Horace Greeley and John Jay High Schools was recently announced as one of the newest inductees into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Along with this achievement, the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame also announced that Swertfager will receive a Lifetime Service Award, “which reflects on the distinguished careers that each of the recipients have had in the sport of wrestling and life.”
Swertfager’s accomplishments as a coach at Horace Greeley and John Jay included numerous accolades, including capturing eight Section 1 team championships and earning Section 1 Coach of the Year honors 15 times. He was also inducted into the Section 1 Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001.
Locally, he was the past president of Lewisboro Little League, a Cub and Boy Scout leader, and is a lifetime member of the John Jay Booster Club.
A statement from the Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recognized Swertfager’s long and successful career:
“Bill’s service to his community and its youth sports are remarkable. He comprehends the importance of all sports in the development of our youth, and goes the extra mile of actually carrying out those thoughts. It is with the upmost respect and appreciation of all the things that Bill does for athletics in his section and state that the Chapter inducts Bill Swertfager into our Hall of Fame.”
Swertfager will be honored at the Hall of Fame Ceremony on Sept. 21 at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse.
